Organizing with Kids

Is it even possible? Barely! But it can be done.

Before I get into it I have to wrap my brain around the fact that the process will be worse before it's better. There'll be a mess on the floor, chaos all around, but it will get done.

I have an almost 3 year old and a 4 year old and coming up with things for them to play with and do isn't easy for me. I find they're the most entertained when they're destroying mama's things or messing with things they're not usually allowed to play with.

So for example, their clothes...instead of doing it alone and pulling out one item at a time I'll take out everything. I repeat - EVERYTHING! I'll put everything from underwear to jackets out for them to dress up in while simultaneously checking sizes and quality of the items. Slowly I'll make a secret pile they can't access for the "get rid of" pile. Once I've gone through all the things we're getting rid of I'll then slowly put everything we're keeping back. It's a process without a doubt but it helps me to reduce any excess things we may have.

I'll do the same thing with the toys, kitchen utensils, art supplies, school supplies and so on. As long as it's safe for them to play with, I'll involve the kiddos. Things I don't involve them in decluttering and organizing is usually things like cds/dvds, medicines and pet supplies.
